Education and Outreach
At MIT, materials science and engineering is taught from a unified perspective, examining the connections between underlying structure and the processing, properties, and performance of a material.
While the Department of Materials Science and Engineering grants degrees in the discipline, there are many academic departments, research centers, and laboratories that provide educational opportunities for those interested in materials research. Because the field is fundamental to so many areas of science and engineering, students in one department may be advised by a faculty from another department, and it is common for faculty to hold joint appointments and perform collaborative research that crosses departmental lines. See MIT's OpenCourseWare site for course materials.
Outreach activities are many and varied across MIT. The opportunities are wide and the personal rewards are great.
